This tartar sauce recipe uses simple ingredients that you can easily find in all grocery stores. It works well with a dairy free diet or vegan diet, and can be paired with tons of different dishes. Below I provide options to use fresh herbs, and other ingredient substitutions.

Recipe ingredient substitutions

Vegan mayonnaise substitutions: swap out the vegan mayo for regular mayo if you are not vegan. You can also make your own homemade mayonnaise.

Dill pickle substitutions: swap out the diced up dill pickles for store-bought or homemade relish. Or you can also swap it out for diced up capers.

Fresh chive substitutions: swap it out for 1 tablespoon dried chives.

Dried dill substitutions: swap it out for fresh dill.

Dried parsley substitutions: swap it out for fresh parsley.

White vinegar substitutions: swap it out for other types of vinegar such as apple cider vinegar, white wine vinegar, or rice vinegar. Or you can use fresh squeezed lemon juice or bottled lemon juice.

Recipe variations

This homemade vegan tartar sauce recipe can be tweaked easily by adding or removing ingredients. Consider adding:

  • Dijon mustard or yellow mustard
  • Maple syrup for a hint of sweetness
  • Garlic powder or fresh garlic
  • Onion powder or fresh onion
  • Sour cream or plain yogurt in place of part of the mayonnaise

Dietary modifications

Make this recipe low FODMAP: use a mayonnaise that does not contain garlic or onion. Avoid garlic dill pickles. Otherwise this recipe is low FODMAP.

Make this recipe vegan: swap out the regular mayonnaise for vegan mayonnaise.
