Do you find it hard to let go of what people think? Who doesn’t right?!
I wanted to share a famous quote from the Stoic Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius, because it’s such a powerful one. And honestly, because stoicism has been the number one thing that has helped me improve my mental health.
Did you know cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) takes inspiration from stoicism? How cool is that! I first learned about stoicism in a book I was reading on CBT.
Marcus, like other Stoics, focused mainly on what he could control, letting go of the rest. This includes what other people think, say or do.
Think about it, we have little to no control over what people think about our actions, behaviours, and even what we wear or look like.
Think about how much suffering we incur being constantly worried about what people will think or say, when in fact we really can’t do much about it.
Think about all the time we waste obsessing about things like this when we could be taking action on the things we do control such as how we respond to things (or not) and of course taking actions that align with our values and goals to improve our lives.
All we can do in life is focus on being a good person, making virtuous decisions, and treating others with respect and the rest is simply up to the universe.
I really like how that makes me feel.
