I used to buy store bought taco seasoning a lot because tacos are one of my favorite things in the world! This was before my homemade taco seasoning recipe came on the scene. Once I started becoming more conscious of the foods that I put in my body, I started looking at the ingredients in these store bought spice mixes. They nasty sometimes!
One thing you will notice about my recipes is that I always call for boatloads of herbs, seasonings and good quality salt. This is because I truly believe well seasoned food is the trick to staying on the healthy eating bandwagon. Wait, keep listening!

It’s hard to stay motivated to eat healthy when all day you dream about all the delicious food you used to eat before. And then you have to come to terms with the under seasoned “healthy” food you are eating for supper that night. Why did I do this to myself again!?
This homemade taco seasoning recipe Is the answer to all your boring “healthy food” problems.
Don’t be shy when you use it! Take whatever amount you would normally put in and try doubling it. I know it sounds crazy, but you will thank me later!
When I make this recipe I usually at least quadruple the recipe and that way it will last us a few times. When you make extra you can store it in an airtight container in the cupboard for at least a couple months.
You might be wondering, isn’t that a lot of salt? Here are my thoughts on why salt shouldn’t be feared if you are eating a whole unprocessed diet:
Salt, which is made up of sodium and chloride, is actually an essential mineral in our body. And you will often hear advice telling you to eat less salt to avoid high blood pressure. This is good advice if you are eating the Standard American Diet (SAD) and consuming lots of processed and packaged foods. But when you are eating a healthy whole foods diet with no processed or packaged food, you will avoid SO much of that hidden salt, and then you can liberally use real, natural salt to bring wonderful flavours to your food without having to worry about over–intake of salt.
Real salt Is also higher in trace minerals because it isn’t processed, refined and stripped like the common table salt – Which is pretty much void of minerals.
Natural real salt is not fortified with iodine though, and while it does have trace amounts of iodine in it, it is best to make sure you are getting an adequate intake of iodine from other sources such as seaweed, seafood, for a high quality iodine supplement
I personally use Real Salt and have for years.
Notes for buying seasonings for this recipe:
Be careful when you are buying spices (especially powders like onion and garlic). They can sometimes contain gluten or other anti-caking ingredients!
Buy good quality and organic when you can and check the label or their website to make sure it’s safe.
Homemade taco seasoning recipe
- 1 tbsp chili powder
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1 tsp ground cumin
- 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes
- 1/2 tsp oregano
- 1/4 tsp pepper
- 1 tsp Salt
- Mix everything together in small glash dish and use to season food as needed
- Store in a container in the cupboard for up to a month
